Dhaka: The High Court (HC) has issued a verdict sentencing five officials of Agrani Bank Limited to three months imprisonment. High Court Justice AKM Asaduzzaman gave this order on Tuesday following the hearing of a plea submitted by Mizanur Rahman, Managing Director of Moon International Printing Press Limited.
The sentenced officials of Agrani Bank Limited are Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Md. Murshedul Kabir, Deputy Managing Director-1 Wahida Begum, Deputy Managing Director-2 Shyamal Krishna Saha, General Manager Fazlul Karim and Manager of Principal Branch AKM Fazlul Haque.
The sentence to the above bankers was conferred on charges of not complying with a particular judgement of the High Court.
Lawyer Nurul Amin advocated for the petitioner while advocate Shamim Khaled Ahmed pleaded for Agrani Bank Limited. The sentenced officials have been ordered to surrender to the court within one month of the issuance of the sentence. The court has also instructed the authorities concerned to confiscate the assets of the above Agrani Bank officials.
Mizanur Rahman, Managing Director of Moon International Printing Press Limited filed a case against Agrani Bank Limited with the High Court regarding a loan. Mizanur Rahman was a Jatiya Party candidate from Borguna 2 constituency in the 12th parliamentary election but his candidature was terminated when Agrani Bank sent a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Borguna referring to Mizanur Rahman as a loan defaulter.
Mizanur Rahman included the above occurrence also in his description in the case lodged with High Court.
It may be added that a report titled “Rabid MD Murshed turns Agrani Bank into “Basic” appeared in The Asian Age on 4 September 2023. Murshedul Kabir is blamed for massive anomalies in Agrani Bank Limited. Reliable sources have stated that some potential clients moved away from Agrani Bank Limited because of the unprofessional approach of Murshedul Kabir which embarrassed the government as Agrani Bank is a state-owned bank.
Reportedly Murshedul Kabir, who has almost no banking experience, was appointed in the Managing Director and CEO post of Agrani Bank through the lobbying by a former Principal Secretary who holds dual citizenship. This ex Principal Secretary has, relevant sources have informed, submitted resignation letter to the World Bank over allegations of moral turpitude.
Economists have expressed hope that Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder and Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali will take proper steps to remove Murshedul Kabir from Agrani Bank without delay and will replace him with a transparent and efficient official.
